Intuition- Trusting Your Gut

Intuition- Should You Follow It?

By: Eden Smith

We have all gotten that “gut feeling” in certain situations- dangerous, risky, or even when things feel slightly off. It is solely up to you as to whether or not you decide to listen to that voice inside your head. Should you?

By definition, it is

“Our innate inclination toward a particular behavior”

It turns out, “intuition” is not a matter of telling the future, but rather, is determined in our unconscious. Science did not even discover that human beings’ unconscious brain played a large role until about one hundred years ago. In an article by Psychology Today, they mention, “20 percent of the brain’s gray matter is dedicated to conscious thoughts, while 80 percent is dedicated to non-conscious thoughts.” Crazy… right?

“The intuitive mind is a sacred gift and the rational mind is a faithful servant. We have created a society that honors the servant and has forgotten the gift.” – Albert Einstein

In effort to find an equilibrium, we need to use both instinct as well as logic and reason to solve a problem. To make sure your life isn’t being unbalanced by one or the other, fix it. Keep in touch with your intuition and who you are, deep down. Keep a journal, make time to just sit and think without distraction. When facing a problem, also consider the outcome of your actions and the consequence they will bring. Balancing intuition and reason will result in better choices all the way around.
